You really have to applaud ASUS for thinking outside the box with their latest device shown at Computex. The Transformer Book V is a hybrid device in several ways. First, it has the ability to run Windows 8.1 and android 4.4, Kitkat. If that’s not enough to pique your interest, it also has five modes of usability. Windows laptop, windows tablet, android phone, android tablet, and android laptop are all rolled into one device.
The tablet’s screen is a 12.5″ 1080P display, with a 3rd generation Intel processor. Along with 4Gb of ram, you get up to 128GB SSD paired with a 1TB HDD for your storage needs. With a 28kWh battery, it’s claimed a runtime of 10 hours is possible in tablet mode. At around 1.76 pounds it’s not light, but not too bad for this size tablet.
The phone is not too shabby either, with 2Gb ram and up to 64Gb storage. With a 5-inch screen, it’s on the larger end of phone sizes these days. It also is the first phone using Intel’s 64-bit quad-core Atom chip with LTE radio(Moorefield). When docked to the tablet, you can access the phone’s android ui.
All in all, it’s an interesting device(s?). Pricing will be something to wait for, as I don’t imagine this will be cheap by any stretch. However, if you think about it, for all that you get, a high price could be worth it. From all indications this won’t be available for some time, so we’ll have to wait and see if it does actually become available. Several other Windows/android hybrid devices have previously been announced, and none have made it to market yet.
